Location

Nabadwip, a small town situated at a distance of 120 kilometers from the “City of Joy”, Kolkata, is a devotee's paradise. Beautifully adorning the banks of the river Hooghly, Nabadwip lying to the north of Kolkata is linked to the city by both trains and roadways.

History

During its early years, Nabadwip used to be the capital of Bengal under the rule of Lakshmansena of the Sena dynasty, till it was further annexed by Mohammed Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1201 - 1202. This eventually made roads to Muslim rule in Bengal. As a place of religion and devotion, Nabadwip still holds its cultural heritage with its innumerable temples and devotees from around the globe

Attraction

Nabadwip, along with Krishnanagar city lying in its close vicinity, has many tourists pouring in throughout the year to pay a visit to the abode of the Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1533). 

Mahaprabhu was a great religious reformer who played a significant role in the revival of Hinduism in Bengal, and introduced the Bhakti Movement that preached equality of all in the eyes of God. Most visited attraction is the Sonargouranga - the temple preserving the golden statue of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Along with the Sonargouranga, the city has various other ancient temples which are historic and architecturally unique. The surrounding serene and calm atmosphere adds to the charm of the place. Other than the temples, other notable attractions include of a Roman Catholic Church and a Protestant Church, the famous Krishnanagar Academy, the College Bhavan and the well-equipped Public Library.

Special Events

An event that pulls the mass in maximum in Nabadwip every year is the Jhulan Mela. It is a festival that takes place in the pattern of a fair, attracting millions to its vigor and popularity. The Jhulan is among the most attractive events of the place.

Nabadwip is indeed a town worth a visit, not only for those deeply religious, but for all those peace-loving souls.
