Location

Mayapur is located in West Bengal's Nadia district and is the reputed International Sri Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) center. The place is situated 130 kilometers north of Kolkata.

History

Mayapur is believed to be the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 16th century Hindu saint, who was also the initiator of the Bhakti Movement. Thus, the place was central to the Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy. The pilgrimage spot owes its rapid growth to Srila Prabhupada, the one who established ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada always wanted to make a spiritual home in the Dham for his students and this desire brought him back to India from the West, where he was occupied in preaching Krishna consciousness.

Mayapur according to Srila Prabhupada is the epicenter of a global spiritual renaissance. This would be a way through which man can go back to a better God-centered way of life.

In Sri Mayapur, Srila Prabhupada firstly achieved a guesthouse. It was his utmost

desire to facilitate the pilgrims and visitors who flock to Mayapur, with great convenience and comfort. He wanted to ensure shelter and nourishment to the spiritually hungry souls who came to Mayapur or according to Srila Prabhupada, the holiest of places.

Following Srila Prabhupada's death, many more guesthouses have been erected here. Apart from the guesthouses, Mayapur now also flaunts a restaurant, Prasadam hall, schools, shops and a cowshed.

Attraction

When you visit Mayapur, you should not miss the Gaura Mandala area that is more than 200 kilometers in diameter and has the Ganges flowing through it. This looks like a hundred-petaled lotus with the Navadvipa or the 'nine islands' in the center.

The ISKCON Chandrodaya Mandir or the headquarters of ISKCON must be visited to view the Radha-Madhava temple. You will be lucky to sight the largest temple that was never built in 200 years - the temple is under construction.

Look out for other attractive sights like the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Yogapitha), Srila Prabhupada’s Pushpa Samadhi, the Shri Chaitanya Math, Chand Kazi’s Samadhi, Sri Srivasa Angan and Bhakti Vinoda Thakura’s House.
