The main purpose behind the construction of the barrage was to divert the flow of water of the Ganges River into Hoogly River during the dry season to wash out the gathered silt, which was a big problem at the main port of Kolkata, situated on the Hoogly River in 1950s and 1960s. The barrage has 123 gates and provides water to the thermal power station.

The Farakka Barrage Township has the Nishindra Village that is known for its high literacy rate. With one High Secondary School with some 2000 students and one degree college named Narul Hasan College at new Farakka, the village shows high rate of literacy.

The town is beautifully surrounded by huge orchards and the National Highway (NH-34) connecting Kolkata and Siliguri through the town is a favorite place for foreign tourists for cycling and biking.

Besides, Farakka has a good number of medium range hotels providing decent accommodation. NTPC is trying its best to place the town at the top with good accommodation, water facilities and hospitality for the local people.
